On Friday we appeared to have missed some big news: Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE has finally been released.
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE was originally announced in January 2013. Indeed, it’s been a long wait for Western gamers to get their hands on it.
Originally titled Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE was heavily anticipated to be a Wii U system-seller and was expected to merge the complex systems of the Shin Megami Tensei series with the accessibility of Fire Emblem. The story looked to bring together characters from both franchises, at least that’s what gamers were expecting.
What we got was something completely different:
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, as it would come to be known, couldn’t have been more far-removed from the two games. Choosing to focus on the Japanese-idol scene, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE looked far more like Atlus’ other popular game series, Persona.
Having played the game for nearly four/five hours, I can confirm that the game’s turn-based battle-system feels very much so like a beautiful marriage between Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei and that, whilst the game is very anime, achieves what it set out to by providing a mystery-filled story.
At least… that’s my first impressions. Whether or not the game is able to successfully maintain its gameplay throughout, and is able to keep the story interesting, remains to be seen… but I’m really loving what I’ve played so far (and I’m not even a fan of modern anime or it’s tried tropes).
If you’re on the fence, I think I can safely say feel free to dive in. If, however, you can wait for a while then feel free to check out our in-depth review which will be coming either later this week or early next week.
Either way, happy singing.
