Mario main Ally has shockingly defeated ZeRo, the #1 worldwide Smash 4 player, winning GOML 2016 in the process.

The fight was incredibly close, with Ally’s Mario only just about defeating ZeRo’s iconic Diddy Kong play. The match ended with a tense 1-stock each scenario, with both Ally and ZeRo on kill percentages.

This marks not only the first ever national tournament win for Ally, but also the first time anybody has won a national using Mario. The character is widely considered an A-Tier fighter, but never seems to accomplish victorious results in a tournament setting.

To be fair to ZeRo, he has just recovered from an injury, and he’s been out of the scene since February. He elaborates more on the situation in an interview with theScore below:

Rumour has it that Mike has never been seen without a pen in one hand and a controller in the other. Writing and games are his passions, so it’s no surprise that he’s the News Editor of the Video Game section. Mike doesn’t pick favourites, but he’ll always have a soft spot for Bloodborne, Undertale and Super Smash Bros – just don’t turn items on.
